Affligem

Almost 1,000 years of brewing art and craftsmanship

The abbey of Affligem was founded by six knights, who became monks in the village of Affligem in 1074. The monks lived according the rules of St Benedict, which emphasised the importance of community. Since drinking water was not the safest option at that time, they decided - very politely and thoughtfully - to brew beer for their guests (which was a safer alternative). So never say Belgians are not hospitable! 
The monks of Affligem went through hard times. They overcame large and small difficulties. But they never lost their passion for brewing!

During the Second World War, the brewery was destroyed. The monks faced a challenge. But when their beer is at stake, Belgians do not give up. The solution? The monks started a collaboration with brewery 'Opwijk', which was close to the abbey. Together, they adapted the old recipe to modern techniques, while retaining the quality and characteristic Affligem taste.

Since 2013, Affligem has been part of Heineken. They have an expertise the average brewery can only dream of, while also retaining its distinctive rich and mellow taste. Affligem beer is one of the oldest Belgian beers.
